Sarawak asks for new deal

This story was first published in Free Malaysia Today and is re-edited for the readers of The Broken Shield)

KUCHING: Sarawak Parti Keadilan Sarawak calls for a new deal to reinstall the rights, the opportunities and the privileges of Sarawakians in the Malaysian agreement as the dreams and visions of its forefathers for better Sarawak have not been achieved.

“The dreams and visions of Sarawak’s forefathers in agreeing to form the federation of Malaysia 47 years ago have not been achieved,”
said its chairman Baru Bian.

Our forefathers had agreed for Sarawak to join Sabah, Malaya and Singapore to form the federation of Malaysia, because they believed that Sarawak would enjoy greater economic development, prosperity and security.

“But today, it is sad to note that the dreams and visions of our forefathers have not been fulfilled,”
he stressed at a dinner attended by PKR leaders both from Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.

The dinner was organised in conjunction with the visit of PKR national leaders as well as to welcome the Malaysia Day celebration.

“We are far behind other states in terms of development. We may pride ourselves that we have the tallest building in the world, yet we are not able to provide simple houses to our people.

“We are proud in that we are able to produce the various types of proton cars, yet we do not have good roads in Sarawak.

“We spent hundreds of millions in order to send a man to space, yet we are not able to provide satisfactory medical services to the people of Sarawak,”
Bian lamented, pointing out that the list goes on and on.

“So I ask my self whether I am happy or not to celebrate Malaysia Day today. I am happy that the federal government has finally agreed to recognise that 16 September is the Malaysia Day.

“For us in Sarawak, it is a very significant day. But on the other hand, I am unhappy because the dreams and visions of our forefathers have not been fulfilled,”
he added.

“What this means to us is that we must bring changes to the State; the need to change the current leadership in Sarawak.

“We all know that the chief minister is the richest man in Malaysia with billions of ringgit worth of properties overseas. We know that Sarawak is the richest state in Malaysia. Yet our people are the poorest in the whole of Malaysia. This is the kind of leadership that we must change.

“Once the current leadership is changed, we must have a new deal, a new agreement for Sarawak in the federation of Malaysia.

“We need to discuss with the federal government a new agreement over oil royalty and a new policy to recognise our rights over land and many more as mentioned in the 20 or 18 points agreement.

“We have national leaders present at the dinner to night and we want them to know what the state wants,”
he said.

Food for Thought

During the celebration of Malaysia Day on 16 September) the obvious absence from the gathering at the stadium perpaduan in Petra Jaya was Abdul Taib Mahmud, chief minister of Sarawak. Why was he not present? Has he no respect for the most important and significant day in the history of Sarawak?

It was not a trivial matter. It has to do with the question of loyalty to the state.

On the other hand, Sarawak United People’s Party which was vehemently against the formation of Malaysia was ironically the one which was the leader in ushering the Malaysia Day.

And the Dayaks especially Ibans who were responsible for the formation of Malaysia were not accorded the privilege and the right. They are being considered in any government form as “lain-lain”.

If the Ibans did not support the formation of Malaysia, there would be no Malaysian federation now.- The Broken Shield.

1Malaysia is not about equality ?

What is the stand of SUPP, PKR, SPDP and PBB in response to UMNO’s Sec-Gen statement that 1Malaysia was not about racial equality?

Wong Choon Mei, Malaysia Chronicle

Not only has Prime Minister Najib Razak made a complete U-turn from an earlier attempt to distance his Umno party from ultra-Malay rights group Perkasa, his trusted lieutenants now even say Najib’s prized 1Malaysia plan is not about racial equality.

The latest comments from Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan were immediately denounced by Pakatan Rakyat leaders.

“This must surely be the biggest joke. Najib. Tengku Adnan and Nazri Aziz are now the 3 Malay stooges while MCA, MIC and Gerakan are the 3 non-Malay stooges. This is BN – forever racially divided and dominated by Umno to the extent that it can anytime slap Soi Lek, Tsu Koon and Samy in the face and yet the three will still bow and say ‘thank you, one more time please’,” PKR strategic director Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.

He was referring to MCA president Chua Soi Lek, Gerakan president Koh Tsu Koon and MIC chief S Samy Vellu.

Explain 1Malaysia

Najib’s furious backpedalling follows a demand from Perkasa to explain what 1Malaysia was or face losing Malay support for Umno and BN in the coming general election.

“Perkasa is very worried that if there are not enough efforts to explain the 1 Malaysia concept, it will cause certain communities to reject Umno and BN. Perkasa has feedback from the Malay grassroots that this concept is still confusing,” Perkasa secretary-general Syed Hassan Syed Ali was reported as saying.

“Among some non-Muslim communities, Perkasa finds that they believe the 1 Malaysia policy is an effort to equalise all races in terms of sharing the nation’s wealth and no race is given special treatment. All races are considered the same.”

Indeed, the brouhaha over Perkasa intensified when a day after Malaysia Day, Najib moved to deny that Umno was cutting its ties to Perkasa. His excuse – which is now being seized on by Umno leaders to help him save face – is that Perkasa is an NGO and not a political party.

“Nazri should accept that Perkasa is just an NGO. The Malays know how to differentiate between political parties and NGO,” wrote the Awang Selamat editorial entitled Alahai Nazri in the Umno-own Minnguan Malaysia, the Sunday edition of Utusan.

“Awang is not surprised the Chinese press have gone all out to condemn Dr Mahathir. This is because the Malay leaders themselves paved the way for them to do so.”

1Malaysia not about racial equality, insists Umno sec-gen

What is the stand of SUPP,PRS, SPDP and PBB in response to the above statement made by UMNO Secretary General, Tengku Adnan ?

What will be the ranking of the Indigenous group of both Sarawak and Sabah if 1Malaysia is still about Malays first followed by the others?

Sarawakians and Sabahans should not be sold by UMNO's lies over and over again. WE must vote against racism, extremism and extremists.

Well said.
We have awakened!
S'jung has stolen too much from us. With leaders like Mahatir, Sleepy Bodowi, undecided Nabi, why we want to stick to their tail and let them spin us round and round?
High time we look after ourselves. We have suffiient wise men to run the whole State ourselves.
In Mahatir's time he sent Minister overseas to seek investment and this clown never even included Sarawak and Sabah in the talk!!!!
We have been short changed!!!
Wake up!
Wake up!
Kick out BN (subservient Taib and gang).
Let this be our BATTLE CRY!

The PM actually meant 1Malay but the Bn media machine as usual adulterated it to read 1Malaysia! Thus Sarawakians, have once again been taken for a ride. Those who celebrated 1Malaysia as promoting equality amongst the races recently have made a "big fool" of themselves in the quest to please the PM. Goes to show another flip flop policy. A 1Sarawak celebration would have been more appropriate.
To the world, Malaysia has a flip flop BN government with another undecisive PM. The fact is, UMNO and Perkasa are hand in gloves all this time. Perkasa means "ketuanan melayu" only and to them the rest of other Malaysians "pendatang or lain2". No wonder Malaysia is on its way down to enjoy third world status once again.
