Bashed for defending his own land

This is a tragic story of a farmer Minggat anak Nyakin and his son Juan trying to defend his NCR land were bashed of by intruders and loggers. Minggat’s case is only a tip of the iceberg; some suffer by being arrested by the authorities.

Yet others who are so scared suffer in silence. But there are those who dare to stand up for their rights, especially those of Rumah Ranggong, Ulu Niah. Instead of being scared, they dare to challenge gangsters sent by an oil palm company to intimidate them.

Minggat anak Nyakin who has a parcel of NCR land at Sungai Rotan and Sungai PenyaruKuba (Kiba) Sarikei found out the hard and excruciatingly painful way that standing up for his rights is no easy task and which almost cost him his life.

“Not only he was badly beaten up, he was also arrested by the Police,” said Ngumbang Anak Barau, of Tahabas (Native land Owners Network). (This story was published by Free Malaysia Today).

He said that on the evening of 14 February 2011, Minggat and his son Juan had gone to their land to check on the outcome of an alleged illegal logging over their NCR land at Sungai Rusa, Sarikei.

They had previously reported the alleged illegal logging over his land to the Police, the Lands and Survey Department as well as the Public Works Department back in December 2010 for investigation.

Upon finding that the logging has continued seemingly unabated, they decided to drop by the log-pond late that Monday evening and tried negotiating for compensation with its manager.

The negotiation went sour and before Minggat and his son could leave the office building, they were initially attacked viciously at its footsteps.

“Although badly hurt, his son managed to escape in the darkness towards a nearby oil-palm plantation, while his father was left in an unconscious state at the foot-steps of the log-pond manager’s office,” Ngumbang said.

He said Minggat and Juan are now admitted at the Sarikei Hospital, with the police guarding them as they are both being remanded.

“Regardless of any wrong-doings or crimes that Minggat or his son may have committed, the source of the problem has yet to be investigated satisfactorily by the authorities.

“Minggat’s family agrees that Minggat should be fairly investigated, and so does the timber company that has been operating for many years on NCR land allegedly without a relevant or valid licence.

“The alleged illegal logging seems to be proceeding unhindered thus far. A police report has been lodged by Minggat’s wife yesterday on 16 February regarding the attack. The attackers have not been arrested,” he said.

As of today, the name of the timber company which owns the log-pond remains unknown to the rest of us, while there is no telling when investigations will be made on Minggat’s and his son’s attackers.

“What is certain is that Minggat and Juan will remain hospitalized for a few more days or even weeks.

“Today, their pains are too debilitating for them to even ponder what they will do next.”
Ngumbang added.

Pelik, tetapi benar (Strange, but true)

Can you believe that when you lodge a police report that you have been assaulted by a gangster, that you yourself are being arrested? And can you believe that one man in Abok, Pantu was arrested a few days ago after he was found felling trees in his own land – titled land?

These strange stories are not made up, but real, real stories. Read the following story which was first published by the Malaysian Mirror.

ULU BALINGIAN – Gangsters seem to be running the show on the current native customary land dispute between a logging company, Bitani Maju Sdn. Bhd. and the Iban community of Sungai Tepus, Ulu Balingian, Mark Bujang, Executive Director of Borneo Institute Research Malaysia (BRIMAS) alleged today.

He said a group of gangsters in 10 cars have been intimidating the natives ever since the natives set up a blockade on 12 March against the said logging company.

“A total of three police reports have been made against the company, but until today no action has been taken against the company or the gangsters who are currently roaming the area,” he said in a Press statement issued to The Malaysian Mirror.

Even though the blockade has been dismantled by the police, the natives, however, still continue with their protests.

“Members of the Iban community of Sungai Tepus, Ulu Balingian are protesting against the illegal logging activities conducted by Bitani Maju Sdn. Bhd. in their native customary land territory.

“Surprisingly, it is the police that are guarding the company workers carrying out their illegal logging operations,”
Mark claimed.

Last Saturday, two of the longhouse members from Rumah Osay were assaulted by a group of gangsters while they were on their way home from Selangau bazaar. One of them managed to flee but another was badly beaten up by the gangsters.

Mark said that Banyau Ak Timbang, one of the persons who managed to flee from the gangsters was riding together with Oren Ak Linggang from Selangau bazaar and as they were about to approach their longhouse junction, a car approached them.

“I noticed Penghulu Thomas Jawa Ak Latu was in the car and the driver of the car forced us to stop,” said Banyau.

“The other occupants of the car came out and we do not recognise them at all. We got into a heated argument with them and then suddenly they started attacking us”, said Banyau.
Banyau said he managed to escape from his attackers but Oren was left behind.

Oren lodged a police report on the attack at the Balingian Police Station the next day. However, instead of taking down his report, the police arrested him.

“The gangsters seem to be controlling the police and also our community leaders”, claimed Banggau ak Panggai, chairman of the joint action committee.

“Our communities are leaving in fear at the moment as the police cannot guarantee our safety. We do not want any untoward incident to happen, so we appeal to the police to take action and stop the gangsters from harassing us any further,” said Banggau. – The Broken Shield

Is Jabu anti West Malaysians?

Is Deputy Chief Minister and deputy president of Parti Bumiputra Bersatu (PBB) Alfred Jabu anak Numpang anti-West Malaysians?

This is the question that members of the public especially members of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) asking themselves after reading Jabu’s statement appearing in The Borneo Post today (12 March 2009).

Jabu had warned “outsiders” not to mess around with the Ibans. Foremost, he said, these “outsiders must never show disrespect for the community’s tradition and culture and they must adhere to the Iban rituals whenever they entered longhouses otherwise bad luck would befall them.

Jabu did not name who the “outsiders” were. If the word applies to West Malaysians, then no one from West Malaysia not even Prime Minister or Deputy Prime Minister can come to Lubok Antu. Even if they come, do we expect them to go to certain rituals (genselan) as suggested by Jabu?

If the “outsiders” means those outside Lubok Antu, then Jabu himself, Abdul Taib Mahmud, James Masing and William Mawan also cannot come to Lubok Antu. Let the Lubok Antu people conduct the by-election by themselves.

It is obvious that Jabu has nothing to say any more as he keeps on repeating what he said several times before. Just imagine the other day Jabu was addressing students and talked politics to them and repeated what he has been saying about “outsiders”.

As the students do not understand politics, Jabu’s intention is/was to sow seeds of hatred against “outsiders” who are Malaysians from the peninsula.

By using the words “don’t mess around with Ibans” does not Jabu appear to behave more like a 'gangster' than a minister or a Dayak leader? – The Broken Shield
